The photographs in The Mask of Fashion offer a visual commentary on both the power of masks in art and the nature of humans’ use of fashion to make a personal statement. Along with care- fully styled garments, its subjects wear dramatic masks to hide their identities. This places the emphasis on the clothing itself yet creates a sense of mystery regarding its wearer. The creative process behind Fashion Masks is both meticulous and collaborative. Some of the masks came from my collection, others were made in collaboration with mask artists. I worked with a stylist to match each mask with a different fashion style, while relating it to some social issue. Each mask has a unique meaning.
The diamond mask that’s encrusted with cut diamonds symbolizes nobility and elegance, while also revealing the deeper implications behind fashion. In the early days of fashion, black and diamonds were symbols of aristocracy. Women were required to wear tight clothes, enduring significant discomfort and restriction to achieve an ideal slenderness. Therefore, the style in the work not only shows the splendor and beauty of fashion but also highlights its invisible limitations, reminding the audience that fashion brings not only external beauty but also internal limitations.
